These data come from the 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). A change in methodology makes direct comparisons to data collected prior to 2011 difficult.
According to the most recent Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data, adult obesity rates now exceed 35% in 17 states. West Virginia has the highest adult obesity rate at 41.6% and the District of Columbia has the lowest at 21.5%. Between 2021 and 2022, the adult obesity rate increased in 21 states: Arizona, California, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
